Galway Emergency Dept under pressure

THE Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway is warning the public of long waiting times due to high attendance.

A total of 286 people attended the ED on Monday, while 34 patients were waiting on trolleys this (Tuesday) morning.

According to the INMO trolley watch figures, a further 17 patients are waiting for a bed in the general wards as well.

Due to the ongoing pressures and lack of bed capacity, the hospital is postponing some elective procedures while urgent and time-sensitive procedures are being prioritised.

Efforts are being made to discharge the patients who are ready to go home, as all available beds along with the surge areas in the hospital are in use.

In a statement, the HSE has apologised to the public for the inconveniences and longer waiting times.

“The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

“Everyone who presents will be treated, with priority given to those who are seriously ill or injured. Patients who do not require urgent care unfortunately may experience longer waiting times.”

The hospital is implementing all possible measures to improve patient flow and reduce delays in the Emergency Department and is asking the public to consider all available healthcare options before attending.

People are being urged to attend their GP, out of hours service or the Roscommon Injury Unit which open from 8am to 8pm daily and treats a range of injuries in both adults and children over the age of five.
