McCarthy and Cahalane goals help Cork dethrone Galway

Thrilling All-Ireland senior camogie final decided by the minimum

Second half goals from Saoirse McCarthy and Orlaith Cahalane proved the defining moments as Cork held off a driving finish from Galway to reclaim the O'Duffy Cup in front of a record-breaking All-Ireland camogie final attendance of 33,419 at Croke Park.

One of the most compelling rivalries in Irish sport delivered in spades yet again. For the third straight season, a solitary score divided the counties with Cork edging deciders in 2024 and '26, either side of Galway's success in '25.

Carrie Dolan nailed a nerveless winning free at the Jones' Road venue 12 months ago, and the Galway captain was at forefront of her side's rally down the stretch that yielded the closing five points in a dramatic endgame. Alas, it wasn't enough with the last of those coming from a 30-metre Sarah Healy free that cleared the crossbar when it was a goal or bust for the Tribeswomen with the game's last puck.

Galway led by 0-9 to 0-7 at the end of a hugely competitive and physical first half. Their shooting accuracy, with the aid of the wind into the Hill end, was of a high order and their two-player inside line of Caoimhe Kelly (three) and Niamh Niland (two) contributed five points. Dolan (two, one free), Aoife Donohue and Dervla Higgins completed their tally.

Seven of Galway's scores arrived from play compared to two for Cork, both via the stick of Sorcha McCartan. Free-takers Amy O'Connor (four) and Saoirse McCarthy came up with the remainder.

Ger Manley's side put the hammer down early in the third quarter, outscoring Galway by four points to one as Emma Murphy, Laura Hayes, Orlaith Cahalane, plus a third from McCartan, nudged the them in front, with a Dolan free the sole riposte from Galway.

Niamh McPeake tied up matters at 0-11 apiece before Cork made a telling move in the 40th minute when Saoirse McCarthy's brilliant solo goal gave her side a lead they would hold to the finish.

Though Niland pulled a point back for Galway, Cork strengthened their position further with a second goal when Orlaith Cahalane broke clear to fire low past Healy for a 2-11 to 0-12 advantage.

With Amy O'Connor adding her fifth placed ball and McCartan and McCarthy topping up their personal tallies, Cork had solidified their advantage with the gap at a clear two goals after Niland's fourth of the day had come in reply for Galway by the 58th minute.

Injuries have been an unfortunate theme of Galway's season and after losing Niamh Mallon during the first half, the departure of Ciara Hickey midway through the second was a major blow in their challenge for back-to-back crowns.

Despite those setbacks, Galway's character shone down the home stretch. They'll regret missed opportunities though scores from Donohue, Mairéad Dillon and two further Dolan frees offered a lifeline before Healy's strike cleared the crossbar and Cork exacted revenge and claimed their 31st title.
