July the third hottest month on record

JULY was the third hottest month recorded in Ireland and the driest July on record, new information from Met Éireann has revealed.

The national mean July 2026 temperature was 17.25 degrees, making it the second hottest July since 1900 (behind July 2013, 17.34 degrees). The mean temperature for the Athenry weather station was 16.9 degrees, up from 16.1 degrees in 2025.

The hot weather nationwide was a result of pressure dominance, which saw records from numerous weather stations nationwide being broken. Heatwaves were recorded at seven weather stations, lasting between five and 13 days.

This July was also the driest month ever seen in Ireland, with 25 weather stations reporting dry spells, 20 absolute droughts and 15 partial droughts.

The hottest month recorded by Met Éireann remains August 1995 where the national mean average was 17.75 degrees.

County Galway has experienced a summer of fine weather, with the Athenry weather station recording the country's top temperature on June 25 of 32.1 degrees. Tuam was not far behind with the mercury figures soaring to 32 degrees that day.
