Motorists honk their horns in support of underpaid healthcare workers

THE succession of beeping horns heard on the Dublin Road in Tuam yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) can be easily explained.

Employees of the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) and service users picketed out in front of the IWA Centre in The Glebe from 12pm to 2pm, holding placards, some of which read ‘Beep to Support’. Many passing vehicles were more than happy to oblige.

It was part of SIPTU strikes taking place nationwide both yesterday and today by those working in the healthcare and community sectors. Hundreds of organisations in Ireland offer healthcare to people living with a disability under Section 39 of the Health Act 2004.

The workers in these sectors have not received a rise in wages in 14 years, having accepted a pay cut in 2008…
