Drinking water problem in Williamstown

IRISH Water says due to a contamination incident in Williamstown, the water treatment plant has temporarily ceased production.

Irish Water and Galway County Council are working continuously to ensure a safe and compliant supply of water is returned to consumers at the earliest opportunity.

Intense agricultural activity coupled with a prolonged dry spell and the recent heavy rain, has given rise to an issue with the raw, untreated water feeding the treatment plant, which is unable to treat the raw water in its current form.

Tankers of drinking water from an alternative supply were distributed across the community yesterday (Monday) to ensure the availability of an alternative supply of water for consumers. These tankers are located at the Square, Smyth’s Petrol Station on the Dunmore Road, and at the Parochial Hall on the Ballymoe Road.

“Irish Water are confident of having the treatment plant back in production this evening (Tuesday) with a full supply of drinkable water available in the network by tomorrow (Wednesday) morning,” explained Irish Water’s Operations Lead for Galway, Ger Greally.

Irish Water and Galway County Council wish to thank the public for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
