Monivea-Abbey are back

AFTER eight years away, Monivea-Abbey are a senior club once more. Saturday’s 0-9 to 0-8 Intermediate Championship final win over Kilkerrin-Clonberne may not have been one for the purists but it mattered not a jot to the winners as they claimed the John Cotter Memorial Cup and returned to the top tier in Galway football.
It’s been quite a 12 months for sporting teams in the area, following on from Abbeyknockmoy’s success in hurling and a first-ever Premier Division soccer title for St Bernard’s in the Galway Junior League.
Their manager Bobby Mullins, described by team captain Brian Flaherty as “the godfather of Monivea-Abbey football”, was a contented figure as he reflected on the result and just how special a return to Senior Championship is for the Monivea-Abbey club.
