Tuam boxers olympic bid begins with fight on mexican team

A TUAM boxer who is hoping to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games takes to the ring tomorrow (Thursday) in London — fighting for a Mexican team.
Gary Sweeney hopes this opening round of this year’s World Series Boxing (WSB) is the first step towards Rio.
Gary, 20, who was born in Tuam but moved to Ballinrobe when he was a child, is a national senior heavyweight champion and a member of the Irish High Performance Squad of elite boxers in Dublin.
Having put his name forward for the WSB last year, the married father of one was drafted into the Mexican team and will now fight three tournaments over the coming months, for a chance to boost his qualification prospects for the Irish Olympic boxing team.
