Property owners must pay to clean up after illegal dumpers

IT has emerged that property owners who are the victims of illegal dumping automatically become legally responsible and liable for the waste, which includes the cost of disposing of any waste that is left on their land.

Members of Galway Co Council expressed surprise and shock when they were informed that property owners who find waste illegally dumped on their land must not only bear the cost of disposing of the waste in a proper manner but are also liable for prosecution if they fail to do so.
