Galway IFA represented at pre-Budget lobby talks in Dublin’s Mansion House
MEMBERS of the Galway IFA attended the Mansion House in Dublin recently for the IFA’s national pre-Budget lobby day.
Galway IFA Chair Micheal Haverty was joined in Dublin by Denis Joyce (Galway IFA Farm Business Representative), Rosemary McDonagh (Galway Representative on the IFA National Council), Martin Hoade (IFA Future Leader, Belclare) and Ronan Dunleavy (IFA Future Leader, Tuam).
The Galway IFA members sat down with Galway East TDs such as Deputy Louis O’Hara, Deputy Albert Dolan and Deputy Pete Roche.
IFA officers from the 29 County Executives met with TDs and Senators at the lobby day to speak with them on the most pressing matters for farming ahead of the upcoming Budget on October 6.
The three main points to the IFA submission for Budget 2027 are the retention of farm schemes, the extension of tax reliefs for the farming sector, and supports to counteract rising costs of production.
The ANC (Areas of Natural Constraints) Scheme was highlighted by the IFA as one payment of particular importance to farmers.
“We reinforced to the politicians who attended that linear cuts to any scheme will not be tolerated by farmers,” said IFA President Francie Gorman regarding the pre-Budget lobby day.
“We know over 500 new applications for the National Sheep Welfare Scheme have been received this year, and no doubt there will be new applications for the National Beef Welfare Scheme later in the Autumn too. These have to be budgeted for, and not paid for by existing applicants, like what happened last year.
“The EU Commission has established a fund to offset the increases in the price of fertiliser that farmers will be facing.
“There is an opportunity for our Government to put co-financing in place and this must be maximised. The support itself needs to be simply administered and hit the farmers pocket directly to have full impact.”
