Children’s charity to celebrate 20 years
HAND IN Hand, a children’s charity founded in Galway, are celebrating their 20-year anniversary by hosting a fundraising Gala.
What began in 2006 as a small Galway volunteer group helping a local family manage travel to Dublin for treatment has grown into Ireland’s dedicated national children’s cancer charity. They provide free, practical, and emotional supports to families nationwide.
On Friday, September 25, Hand in Hand will mark 20 years with a landmark 20th Anniversary Gala at the Galway Bay Hotel.
"When a child is diagnosed with cancer, a family’s entire world stops, but the demands of everyday life do not," commented Mark Dwyer, CEO of Hand in Hand.
"Over the past 20 years, it has been our privilege to support families across Ireland through their darkest hours. While this 20-year milestone allows us to reflect on what our supporters have helped us achieve, it is also a stark reminder that the need for our services is as urgent as ever."
In 2024 alone, the charity supported 135 families across the country with essential services that keep households running during treatment.
This included delivering 215 professional household cleans, providing 111 laundry services, and running a pilot program that provided nutritious family meals to 12 households.
Beyond physical chores, the charity provides a crucial emotional safety net. Hand in Hand delivered 811 emotional support sessions through a dedicated network of 20 external play therapists across 13 counties and 10 qualified counsellors working across five counties.
Their dedicated team of experts ensured both diagnosed children and their loved ones have access to professional mental health care.
The 20th Anniversary Gala will be hosted by broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, featuring a black-tie reception, three-course dinner, and live music.
"Hand in Hand provides a unique lifeline that takes care of the practicalities at home so parents can be fully present for their sick child," stated Miriam O’Callaghan.
