Drainage works in Claregalway stalled until 2027

PLANNED drainage works in Claregalway village are being delayed until 2027, with Galway County Council yet to appoint a contractor.

Standing water and failing drainage systems are creating dangerous conditions for the 20,000 motorists who pass through the village every day. The problem is worsened whenever the area is subject to heavy rainfall.

The N83 Baile Chláir Traffic Calming Scheme plans to provide improved drainage infrastructure, new pedestrian and cycling facilities and enhanced crossings and junctions.

A drainage attenuation pond to address local flooding issues, was completed in 2024 ahead of further drainage works.

Construction works were due get to get underway before the end of the year, however the project has stalled, leading to questions from Athenry-Oranmore District Councillor Cillian Keane.

“When can we expect to progress to the next step in the drainage upgrades in Claregalway?” he queried during last week’s meeting of Galway County Council.

“People in the areas are scratching their heads as it is such a busy road, yet they are not seeing any of the promised drainage works progressing.”

Director of Services for Roads Uinsinn Finn confirmed they have already begun speaking with local business owners ahead of work taking place. He expects the tendering process of the project to be completed next year.

“We need to make sure that the impact on road traffic caused by the works is minimal, as this is a national road that can get very busy,” noted Mr Finn.
