Live traffic cameras aim to combat Claregalway congestion

LIVE traffic cameras are to be installed at every traffic light and at other locations in Claregalway in a bid to minimise traffic disruptions once major works begin in the village.

The Council has received €4million to carry out long-awaited pavement improvements and traffic calming measures. The significant project is due to go to tender later this summer with works expeccted to begin towards the end of the year.

Senior Roads Engineer for the County Council Conrad Harley said that the high volume of traffic is going to be the most difficult part of the scheme. To help manage traffic congestion, the Council is preparing a live traffic management plan. This will include live cameras being installed on roads in Claregalway that will feed into a central controller. This will allow for the traffic lights to be better managed during the work and avoid traffic build up.

A Community Liaison Officer will also be appointed, who will be the first person of contact while the works are underway.

Acknowledging the updates, Fine Gael Cllr David Collins also requested an updated map of the works to be undertaken in Claregalway. These will be made available once they are finalised.
