WORKS underway in Headford town centre.

Headford Active Travel Scheme nearing completion

WORK on a new active travel scheme on Church Road in Headford is on course to be completed in the coming weeks.

Galway County Council and the National Transport Authority are developing the scheme to improve safety and accessibility along Church Road (L-2103). The road is home to a church, a primary school, secondary school, a creche and Moyne Villa FC.

Among the works being carried out are the creation of wider footpaths, a raised zebra crossing near the church car park, new pedestrian openings and raised entry treatment at the church car park.

Councillor Mary Hoade confirmed to The Tuam Herald that Harringtons were scheduled to be on site earlier this week to do the overlay work and Colas will then do the line marking. The works are planned to be substantially completed towards the end of next week.

She has also been assured that should the project not be completed before schools reopen on Thursday August 27; any remaining work will be carried out outside of peak school times.

“I have to thank John Coyle, Tom Coleman and all the staff in the Tuam Roads Office for the work they have put into this project, especially Tom who engaged with many groups in the community to make sure we got it right,” commented Cllr Hoade.

“Church Road can get extremely busy at peak times. This active travel scheme will make a huge difference and make it safer for students and parents to navigate the road safely.”

The active travel scheme for Church Road will also include school zone road markings, bollards to prevent illegal parking and designated parking spaces.
