Galway hosts political and economic event

Over 100 politicians to gather in the city

GALWAY will host the European People’s Party (EPP) Summer University with discussions focused on EU-US relations and transatlantic trade.

The event to take place from Wednesday, June 10 to Friday, June 12 will bring more than 100 politicians, MEPs, business leaders and policy experts from across Europe, including EPP President Manfred Weber to Galway.

“The Summer University will provide a major political and economic boost for Galway and the wider region,” commented Midlands-North-West MEP Maria Walsh.

“This is one of the largest political gatherings of MEPs to take place across the EU and it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our region on the European stage.”

She further said that having the MEPs who lead negotiations in Brussels on key files and policies travel to the region will allow them to see firsthand the challenges and opportunities we face on the ground.

“This is a rare and significant occasion for the West of Ireland as the decisions these negotiators make in the European Parliament directly impact the lives and jobs of all in our region,” noted Ms Walsh.

A major focus of the programme will the future of EU-US relations and strengthening transatlantic cooperation.

MEP Walsh believes that Galway is uniquely positioned to host these discussions due to the region’s strong links with transatlantic trade.

“The event will also focus on Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union; an important opportunity for us to shape the future direction of Europe,” she continued.
