Over 500 children waiting two years for disability assessment
MORE than 500 children are waiting for almost two years for an Assessment of Needs (AON) in Galway.
Ballinasloe Cllr Evelyn Francis Parsons told a meeting of the Regional Health Forum West that under the Disability Act, these assessments should commence within three months and be completed within six months.
She said that the figure indicates a failure of the system which was set up to fast forward or expedite care. “I know you are trying to address the issue, but it is not good enough,” remarked Cllr Parsons.
The West region has been allocated €1.9 million to outsource AON assessments, which is actively taking place in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. Recruitment for the AON Office is at an advanced stage and is expected to be completed soon to assist with the waiting times for children.
Integrated Health Area Manager for Galway and Roscommon Ann Cosgrove admitted that it is a significant challenge for the department. She couldn't provide a timeline for when the wait times could be reduced. “It is going to be continuous work, over the next year, two years or more. There are constant referrals and we are trying to keep on top of that,” said Ms Cosgrove.
Cllr Parson emphasised the need to have additional resources employed since the “capacity is not yet in place” and “no timelines” were presented to reduce the wait times.
“I am particularly worried about children and the avoidable harm that we could impact at this stage if we got them in time,” added Cllr Parsons.
