Ladies favoured to retain title

CBE Cup up for grabs on Sunday afternoon

THREE weeks after losing the National League Division 1 final to Cork, Galway’s senior ladies footballers are aiming to defend their Connacht title against Mayo on Sunday in Carrick-on-Shannon (throw-in: 3pm).

Chasing a 20th title and a three-in-a-row, the Tribeswomen are strong favourites, but history shows this fixture rarely goes to form. Galway’s 2024 win came following a relegation and finished with them contesting an All-Ireland final.

“It’s a momentum turner for sure,” said Galway manager Daniel Moynihan. “We definitely were underdogs a couple of years ago. We brought a great fight to grasp that Connacht title back for ourselves and managed to hold onto it last year.

“Mayo are going slightly under the radar in Division 2. They had a couple of draws. Apart from that, they would have been back in Division 1 again.”
