Coen, Trill goals set Galway ladies on the road to victory
A SLOW start but an impressive recovery summarised the Galway performance in Ballinasloe on Saturday as they eventually made it back-to-back wins with a merited come-from-behind success in their National Football League Division 1 contest with Armagh.
A player down following a yellow card inside just two minutes, they trailed by four points after the opening quarter, but back to full strength would outscore the visitors by 1-6 to a point over the next 15 minutes.
An Andrea Trill goal just before the break certainly helped the cause before two more in a five-minute spell on the resumption from Leanne Coen allowed them to open an eight-point advantage.
In reality, they were out of sight at that stage. However, Armagh were resilient and with Caroline O'Hanlon and Kelly Mallon to the fore, they narrowed the margin somewhat but were always chasing the game thereafter.
Galway made one change from the side that saw off Kildare in their previous outing as Aoife Molloy replaced Sophie Healy. The home performance in the early exchanges was sluggish and Aisling Madden's early sin-binning also had them on the back foot.
Points from Kelly Mallon (free), Blaithin Mackin (two) and Christina O'Reilly had the visitors four clear after 11 minutes. A Róisín Leonard free got Galway off the mark on 14 minutes but it was quickly cancelled out by another Mallon placed ball to leave Armagh 0-5 to 0-1 up on 16 minutes.
