Tuam’s Day Care Centre opens after lengthy delay
LONG-awaited Day Care services at the multi-million-euro Tuam Community Nursing Unit have opened — more than a year after the new facility was officially opened.
The Joe and Helen O'Toole CNU on the Purcell Road opened its doors for the first time to Day Care Services just over a week ago. The HSE service had been operating from the Toghermore campus, but this was closed at the end of January. The new centre’s opening had been delayed for many months due to issues with staffing.
Currently up to ten people attend the centre where they enjoy a variety of activities such as music, dancing, bingo, cards, chair exercises and arts and crafts.
The service runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week from 10:30 am to 4pm with a Dementia specific day care on Wednesdays. Referrals for the service can be made through the local Public Health Nurse and GP.
One of those who is using the service in the CNU is Tuam’s Brendan Gilligan. “I meet like-minded people. I get on fine. I like to support the day care as it is near me,” he remarked.
