Diving into 75 years of Tuam Swimming Club
Anniversary celebration planned
THERE will be lots to celebrate and memories to recall when present and past members of Tuam Swimming Club gather to mark their 75th anniversary later this month.
When the club started in the 1950s, Tuam didn’t even have a swimming pool and swimmers learned and trained in the cool waters of the River Clare at Ballygaddy Road. The now extinct swimming pool that was housed in St Jarlath’s College when it was a boarding school was also used for lessons.
Tuam’s first heated public pool didn’t open until 1972 and it was the result of years of campaigning by the club, especially stalwart members Gay Heskin and Gay Walsh.
