Caherlistrane Kilcoona to rally support to keep local post office
AS Barnaderg continues to wait for a decision on the future of its post office, two other communities in Co Galway are meeting this week to rally support for the retention of postal services in their areas.
A meeting was held in Cappataggle last night (Tuesday), and the Caherlistrane/Kilcoona Community Council are holding a public meeting tonight (Wednesday) following the closure of the local shop, which ran the post office for the area.
The death of the post mistress in Cappatagle has prompted concerns over the future of its post office, while the transfer of social welfare payments to Headford Post Office has led to fears that when the Caherlistrane shop reopens, the postal service it offered will not be resumed.
Vinny Judge, of Caherlistrane/Kilcoona Community Council, said all efforts to get information from An Post had failed and he was urging people from the area to attend the meeting at the community centre at 9pm.
“Up to 40 people collect pensions and social welfare payments from this post office and are now having to travel into Headford,” he said. “The shop itself will be re-opened, so we are looking for a commitment from An Post that the postal services that have been available will return when it does.
“We are following the situation in Barnaderg and in other areas throughout the country and we are very concerned that this vital service may be withdrawn permanently, so we need to get answers from An Post.”
