Row over bridge could put 5 million road project at risk

A €5.5 million road project in North Galway could be in jeopardy because of a row over the NRA’s decision not to put back a landmark bridge during the works.
The scheme on the N63 at Ballyglunin was due to start later this year but councillors have yet to officially sign it off. Irate local representatives feel they are being “browbeaten” by the NRA into a proposal which they fear may result in Ballyglunin’s Railway Bridge never being replaced.
The major upgrade will include a footpath and cycle lane along the three-kilometre stretch of road which will connect Abbeyknockmoy to the new M17 motorway. The works were also to involve the raising and replacement of Ballyglunin’s Railway Bridge but councillors were shocked to discover the intention is to hold off replacing the bridge until Irish Rail request the Council to do so.
