Fenced off: St Andrews in Kilconly

Fencing at kilconly church turns scenic spot into eyesore

HOPES that a Kilconly church that was once a popular tourist attraction in the village can be restored have been dashed with the erection of steel fencing around the site.
Members of a committee formed to preserve St Andrew’s Church of Ireland church have complained that Galway County Council’s decision not to fund the project has led to the once scenic spot becoming an eyesore in the village.
A campaign launched last year to have the roof of the church removed had hoped to secure funding through the Heritage Council. However, the application for €40,000 was rejected and now the community is calling on the council to carry out the work.
Eilish Tierney said local people are worried at the rapid decline in the building, which is now inaccessible since the council erected the fencing on health and safety grounds.
