Second largescale windfarm refused in North Galway
Project was earmarked for 739acres
THE nine-turbine Cooloo Windfarm proposed for 739acres of land in Barnaderg and Moylough has been refused planning permission by An Coimisiún Pleanála.
An Coimisiún Pleanála refused planning for the proposed development on four grounds relating to environmental, ecological, hydrological and peatland concerns.
The Cooloo Windfarm is the second SID (Strategic Infrastructure Development) wind project in the North Galway region to be refused by the national planning authority. In September the proposed 11-wind turbine Shancloon Windfarm in Kilconly and Caherlistrane was rejected.
Neoen Renewables Ireland lodged a planning application for the Cooloo Windfarm in September of last year for the townlands of Cloondahamper, Cloonascragh, Elmhill, Cooloo, Lecarrow, Dangan Eighter, Lissavally and Slievegor.
Decisions are awaited on two other largescale SID windfarm developments in the region. Planning for the Laurclavagh Windfarm in Belclare, which has eight wind turbines, was submitted in March of 2024, while a planning application was lodged in July of the same year for the 11-wind turbine Clonberne Windfarm.
