THE vacant buildings in Moylough village where the four new homes are to be built

Contract signed for Moylough €1million housing development

A HOUSING project of almost €1million will see four new homes built in the centre of Moylough and is expected to be completed by May of 2028.

The €982,556 project will be carried out at Plás Stiofáin between Cheevers Pub and Moylough Post Office in the village. It will see three vacant buildings redeveloped into two three-bedroom houses and two two-bedroom apartments. Galway County Council have signed a contract for the social housing development with Mannon Build Ltd.

The front façade of the existing terrace is to be retained, and the four homes will be built behind it. Two of the buildings that are being redeveloped are approximately 200 years old and are listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.

Moylough Councillor Michael Connolly has said he is pleased to see dereliction in his local village being addressed.

“I have known this property since my school days and later worked in the pub and shop, so I have a strong personal connection to the property. Having worked for the past 20 years to see the property brought back into use, I am delighted that the contract has now been signed,” said the Fianna Fáil Cllr.

“This development will remove dereliction from the heart of Moylough, provide new homes and preserve an important part of the village’s heritage for future generations.”

“Town and village renewal is a key priority for Galway County Council. Bringing vacant buildings back into use helps breathe new life into our communities and gets people living in the centres of our towns and villages,” said County Council Cathaoirleach Andrew Reddington.

“This project will preserve an important part of Moylough's built heritage while providing four new homes. It is about protecting the character of the village and ensuring these buildings have a future.”

The local authority’s housing section will be responsible for the architectural design of the new homes. SDS Design Engineers, Lawler Consulting Engineers and CQS Group will also be working on the project.
