Women in agriculture conference draws a large crowd

A FULL house attended the ACRES West Connacht Women in Agriculture Conference in Westport this month.

Women from farming and rural communities across the province attended the conference in the Mulranny Park Hotel on October 8, with speakers addressing the crowd, and panel discussions and networking sessions being held.

The speakers included MEP Maria Walsh, Blátnaid Gallagher of the Galway Wool Co-op and the Murray Meadows mixed farm near Aughrim, and the founder of The Women of Ireland Project Dr. Belinda Vigors.

“The future of farming cannot be separated from the participation, leadership and visibility of women in this sector,” said MEP Walsh, who joined the conference online and highlighted the importance of women being recognised as equal partners in the farming sector.

Panel discussions heard from women working in different aspects of the sector. The conference finished with a closing address from Mary McAndrew, the Project Director of ACRES West Connacht.
