Killererin celebrates reopening of revamped community centre
There was a tremendous sense of pride, gratitude and celebration in Killererin recently as a capacity crowd gathered for a special thanksgiving Mass for the official reopening of the refurbished Killererin Community Centre.
The evening marked the culmination of years of planning, fundraising, volunteer effort and community support, as parishioners came together to celebrate not only the transformation of the building itself, but the community spirit that made it possible.
The Mass celebrated by Fr. Ronnie Boyle provided an opportunity to reflect on the rich history of the building and the generations of people who have contributed to its story. Once home to Barnaderg National School and later transformed into a community centre, the building has remained at the heart of parish life for decades.
Chairperson of Killererin Community Council Olivia Rooney paid tribute to the many people who played a role in the project and reflected on the importance of community, volunteerism and belonging.
“Nothing meaningful is ever achieved alone,” she told those gathered. “This project was carried by people who cared deeply about their community and were willing to give their time, energy and expertise to ensure that this centre would continue to serve future generations.”
Particular acknowledgement was given to the countless volunteers, committee members, sponsors, funding bodies, local tradespeople and supporters who contributed throughout the refurbishment process.
The council also highlighted the strong emphasis placed on accessibility and inclusion throughout the project, with a commitment to ensuring that the centre remains a welcoming and accessible space for all members of the community.
The evening concluded with refreshments and an opportunity for those attending to explore the refurbished facility, reconnect with neighbours and share memories of the building’s long and important history within the parish.
Speaking afterwards, members of the Community Council expressed their delight at the overwhelming attendance and support shown by the community.
“The turnout exceeded all expectations. To see the hall filled with people, many of whom have supported this project in different ways over many years, was incredibly moving. The evening was a reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose and a belief in their community.”
As the centre begins this new chapter, Killererin Community Council has reaffirmed its commitment to its mission of bringing the community together and ensuring that the facility continues to serve as a place of welcome, connection, inclusion and opportunity for generations to come.
The council thanks everyone who attended the celebration and all those who contributed in any way to making both the project and the evening itself such a resounding success.
