Cultural event to share stories of Tuam’s refugee community
The event takes place on Saturday June 20
PEOPLE in Tuam are set to be given a chance to hear the stories of the refugees who now call the town their home.
The Tuam Make A Difference Youth Club are hosting their annual My Culture, My Heritage Celebration in the Family Resource Centre on Saturday June 20 from 4-7pm.
It has quickly become a celebration of the town’s growing multicultural community. However for 2026 they have chosen to use the event to also shine a light on refugees, a group of people who are often misunderstood or misrepresented by the public.
“June marks Refugee Month, with events running nationwide. We will be celebrating those based in Galway, especially those in Tuam, who will make presentations about their lives at our event,” explained Blessing Oguekwe, coordinator of the Tuam Make A Difference Youth Club.
“They will talk about their stories, such as why they ended up in Ireland, how they have integrated into the community and the love they have received from the people of Tuam since arriving.
“I think a lot of people only see the refugee, they don’t the person behind that status. Once they hear their stories and a bit about what they are really like personality wise, people will be more willing to see them as part of the community here in Tuam.”
Cultural Displays
The event will also include cultural food displays, music, dance, performances, stories, and community participation from people from various nations now living in North Galway.
Among those signed up already are people from India, Ukraine, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Jordan, Brazil and Ireland. It will bring together refugees, migrants, young people, families, and the wider community in a spirit of inclusion and togetherness.
“So many people from different nationalities and cultures have moved to Tuam and we already have ten nationalities signed up to take part. I’m hopeful we will get a few more involved too over the next few weeks,” added Blessing.
“I think people should come along as it is a chance to get to know people in their locality who come from different countries. There is such beauty in culture and people will have a great time seeing and experiencing what culture is like in other nations.
“Last year we saw a lot travelling from far beyond Tuam and Galway to take part, so I’m hoping we get a good crowd. It was a great success, and we are working very hard on 2026’s celebrations. Hopefully we will get great support once again,” she concluded.
