Athenry homes latest in council rollout of affordable homes
More coming on stream in C’galway
APPLICATIONS will open later this month for the purchase of more than 100 affordable homes being built in Athenry.
The development, Fearann na hEascragh, on the Raheen Road near the town’s train station will be delivered by Galway County Council in association with Highgate Properties Limited.
The scheme of 106 homes will be completed in three phases, with the first phase of 33 now nearing completion (32 three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroom).
Another 48 homes are expected to be completed by June 2027, while a further 25 homes are expected to be delivered by September 2027.
In the last few years, Galway County Council has been actively pursuing opportunities to build affordable housing developments across Co Galway.
The most recent project was in Claregalway, where two schemes Garraí Na Gaoithe and Droim Na Gaoithe will deliver more than 100 affordable homes.
Administrative Officer in the Housing Department of Galway County Council John Waters told The Tuam Herald that the 61 affordable houses in Garraí Na Gaoithe have been fully allocated with a few remaining units scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2026. A further 66 affordable houses are scheduled for delivery in Droim Na Gaoithe in Claregalway by the end of June 2027.
Online portal
An online portal for applications for the affordable homes in Athenry will open on Thursday, May 21 at 10am until Thursday, June 11. An information evening for interested applicants will be held at the Raheen Woods Hotel on Thursday, May 14 at 7pm.
Chief Executive of Galway County Council Liam Conneally said that the development shows “what can be achieved through strong partnership between local authorities, Government, the construction sector and local communities”.
“The backing from the Government and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has enabled us to deliver significant investment in affordable housing,” he added.
Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council Cllr David Collins called it a “very positive” day for the community of Athenry and surrounding areas.
“I want to pay tribute to the staff of Galway County Council’s Housing Section for their continued work with councillors to identify housing need, progress projects and support families. That partnership is central to the real progress we are making under Delivering Homes, Building Communities,” he said.
