SHOULDER TO THE WHEEL

Tuam St Patrick’s Day Parade to embrace inspirational theme

TUAM’S ancient name forms the inspiration for this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade, the theme for which hopes to encourage the community to get involved in the town.

By encouraging participants to adopt a Shoulder to the Wheel theme, organisers are hoping for a celebration of volunteerism on the streets of the town on Sunday March 17.

Parade Secretary Shaun Cunniffe said the idea had come from Tuam’s ancient name Tuaim Dhá Ghualainn, (Tuam of the two shoulders), and said it was hoped the parade would be a call to action for people in the town to consider volunteering in their community.

“Our message is a local one emphasising that if local people don’t put their ‘shoulder to the wheel’ and do things for their locality, town, and community, things simply won’t get done,” he said.

“We salute the tremendous volunteerism that currently exists in the Tuam area, the time that is given in sports, social, cultural and community activities and commend them all.”

Shaun said an invitation would be extended to other parades in north Galway to bring their floats to the Tuam parade…
