Martyn’s three goals inspires Dunmore’s epic comeback

A HAT-TRICK of goals from Padraig Martyn helped Dunmore Community School complete a remarkable turnaround and qualify for the Connacht GAA PPS Senior ‘B’ Football final, writes Ivan Smyth.

Dunmore CS appeared on the brink of elimination when they trailed 2-14 to 0-11 after 43 minutes. The Dunmore side had shown no shortage of battling spirit up until this point, but had been on the back foot against a more efficient Roscommon CBS outfit.

After falling nine points in arrears, Dunmore CS managed to bury three goals in as many minutes to equalise the contest.

The impressive Rory Carthy helped Roscommon CBS momentarily hit back but Dunmore left their opponents reeling when Martyn palmed to the net to complete a memorable hat-trick.

Yet, the drama continued to unfold. Carthy and Colm Costello, an All-Ireland winning minor with Galway in 2022, continued to move the scoreboard for their respective sides, before Roscommon CBS saw their last chance at a fightback come up short.

In the 59th minute, Carthy and Ruairi Kilcline combined to set Eoin Murray through on goal. Dunmore CS ‘keeper Chris Donnellan came out off his line and dived low to deny Murray with the follow up strike from Ryan Hanly flying over the sticks. This cut the Dunmore CS lead to two, but a late Costello free helped his side hold on for a famous win…
