Taking ‘Stock’ on long walk

Stockie Memorial Walk attracts huge numbers to Knockma

HUNDREDS of people joined the family of Francis ‘Stockie’ Stockwell over the weekend for the inaugural Memorial Walk in his honour that took place at Knockma last Saturday.

Raising funds for Galway Hospice and organised by Tuam Lions Club, with the support of Tuam Stars GFC, Tuam Celtic FC and St Jarlath’s College, the event saw over 400 people of all ages tackle a rain soaked Knockma in memory of the Tuam stalwart who passed away three years ago.

Over €15,000 has already been raised through bucket collections and an iDonate fundraising page, which will remain open until mid September to facilitate further donations to the cause.

Stockie was a sporting icon in the town, having played with huge distinction for Tuam Stars and Tuam Celtic, the latter of which he was still togging out for into his 50s.

As a valued member of staff at St Jarlath’s College for well over 20 years, he was instrumental in guiding and encouraging generations of young men who passed through the school, where he himself had been a past pupil and Hogan Cup winning footballer…
