A tribute to 'Stockie'

Memorial walk to celebrate life of Tuam legend

THE life of a Tuam legend, Francis ‘Stockie’ Stockwell, who passed away three years ago, will be celebrated in a memorial walk to be held at Knockma next month.

Stockie was a renowned footballer and soccer player, who took his love of sport and nurtured generations of young athletes at St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, where he worked.

His death in 2020, after a long illness, caused widespread shock and sorrow and his bubbly character is still greatly missed by all who had the honour of knowing him.

The Stockie Memorial Walk is being organised by his family in conjunction with Tuam Lions Club, Tuam Stars and Tuam Celtic, along with the staff of St Jarlath’s College.

It takes place at 11.30am on Saturday August 26 and will raise funds for Galway Hospice, whose team took care of him in his final weeks. The walk will be led by Stockie’s wife Olga, son Jamie and daughter Bobbi, who is returning home from Canada for the occasion.

“Dad battled cancer for two and a half years and, through it, he never gave up,” said Bobbi…
