Headford hall may have to close

Latest electricity bill was €3,700

ST FURSA’S HALL, the community centre in the centre of Headford, will have no choice but to close its doors on August 1 if the centre’s next electricity bill is as high as the latest bill.

The centre is due to be charged €3,700 by its supplier for two months’ worth of energy usage. The centre is occupied six days a week, by three or four groups from the locality each day.

The energy provider for the hall was changed last year from ESB to Bord Gáis, a switch that has not yielded much of a return in terms of expenditure.

“We have just over €4,000 in the bank at the moment. We’ll have about €500 left after we pay this bill. If the next electricity bill leaves us in the red, we’ll have no other choice but to close our doors, which is ridiculous,” said John McHugh, Secretary of the St Fursa’s Hall Committee…
