Vigil for Ukraine

One year on and still standing

OUTSIDE the Town Hall in Tuam on Friday evening, candles flickered in the breeze as a crowd of Ukrainian refugees and local supporters gathered to mark the first anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

The event was organised by Tuam Embracing Diversity (TED), a sub-group of Tuam Tidy Town.

Speaking on behalf of TED, Mary Ryan said it was a sombre anniversary of a crime against international law.

She referred to the thousands of people who have been killed, and the millions who have had to flee their homeland, driven out by Russian weapons.

A young Ukrainian student, Yaroslav Tretiakov, took up the theme. He said it was a tragic honour to speak on the anniversary of the day when “military forces of the neighbouring terrorist state viciously invaded my motherland”…
