Memorial statue and park planned for An Gorta Mor Trail

THE Uaigneas monument stands in Subiaco, a suburb in Perth in Western Australia, and an equivalent structure is planned for the town of Mountbellew.

The memorial statue remembers the 30 teenage girls, aged from 14 to 19, who left the Mountbellew Poor Law Union (Workhouse) for Perth in November 1852, never to return to their homeland. It was undertaken by husband-and-wife artists Charles Smith and Joan Walsh Smith, who are from Ireland and living in Australia.
