Canavan is first past the post in Athenry

New Galway IFA Chairman says Government needs to put a cap on input costs

COROFIN farmer Stephen Canavan was elected as the new Chairman of Galway IFA at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday night.

Mr Canavan beat Martin Murphy (Turloughmore) and Peter Gohery (Eyrecourt) in a three-candidate race at the Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry.

There was a total of 242 votes cast by the officers of all the IFA branches present in the county. Canavan polled highest of the first preference votes with 95, with Murphy receiving 83 and Gohery 64. Canavan then got 43 of Gohery’s second preference votes, while Murphy scored 20 of those votes.

The outgoing Chairperson Anne Mitchell of Menlough was given the honour of announcing her successor after the count was tallied.
