Tuam nurse escapes war in Ukraine to take her mother to safety

Nurse has been supported by local public representatives

A TUAM nurse is on her way home from her native Ukraine almost two weeks after she travelled to the war torn Eastern European country to bring her mother to safety.

Polina Furnika has lived in Tuam for over 15 years and works as a theatre nurse in University Hospital Galway. The married mother of two young children left Ireland last week, arriving in Ukraine two days before war was declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
