Ultimately, the Peatlands Climate Action Scheme will rehabilitate in excess of 33,000 hectares of peatland in Ireland.

Boglands restored as Ireland imports peat from Europe

OVER 1,500 hectares of peatlands were rehabilitated in Galway last year as part of Bord na Móna’s Peatlands Climate Action Scheme.

Bord na Móna announced on Wednesday, February 2, that there was a total of 5,200 hectares of peatlands restored across the country in 2021, an announcement that coincided with World Wetlands Day.

The climate action scheme’s focus for 2021 fell on 18 bogs in Galway, Roscommon, Offaly, Longford and Roscommon. Galway was second to Offaly when it came to the highest amount of peatland recovered.

In Galway, there are 12 raised bogs designated as Special Areas of Conservation, and 14 raised bogs with status as Natural Heritage Areas.
