AN EXHIBITION of art works by a Headford artist will showcase the everyday life of Franciscan Friars in the area in the 16th century.

The event running from Monday, June 1 to the end of August at the Ross Errilly Friary, will open with a walking tour by Marcus Wynne.

Situated on the banks of river Corrib, Ross Errilly Friary first opened in 1350 and was closed in early 1700s after the friars were forced to flee the place.

The art pieces created by local artist Emer MacDermott, depicts the simple lives of devotion and community under a vow of poverty.

“They provided spirituality, food, medical care and education to the community, in exchange for provisions,” said Ms MacDermott.

Following long research into the lives of those Friars, Emer is now determined to show the visitors what life looked like at the Friary when it was home to 144 friars during the 1500s.
