The restrictions during the pandemic confining people to their homes left victims of domestic abuse in terrifying situations.

Domestic violence on the rise in Galway

1,792 incidents of domestic violence in county in 2021

RISING incidents of domestic violence throughout Galway over the past year have prompted calls for an official assessment of the impact of the pandemic on victims of abuse.

Aontú’s Tuam representative Luke Silke says there needs to be a joint response to the problem at Government level and urged people affected by domestic violence to seek help.

The Lavally native, who is seeking to contest a seat on Galway County Council at the next local elections in two years, insists more needs to be done to promote the many services available to domestic violence victims.

“Galway Gardaí responded to 1,792 incidents of domestic violence in the county last year, an increase of 285 on the previous year,” he says.
