Private bus operators struggle to survive

PRIVATE bus operators in Galway say it will take at least another year before they can return to pre-pandemic services, with fears that a post-Covid world will still pose huge challenges for the transport sector.

Burkes Buses, which has continued to run its Tuam to Galway service throughout the pandemic, is currently carrying as few as one or two passengers on some of its buses. Buses are limited to 25 per cent capacity under Level 5 public health restrictions but the number of passengers travelling on a daily basis falls well below that figure.
