Public libraries are much more than places to bury yourself in a book

JUST under 25,000 people are members of a public library in Galway city and county. It’s a figure that probably should be a lot higher considering it’s free, open to everyone and suitable for all ages. If you don’t use the library or haven’t visited, the question is why?
The message from open days in libraries over the weekend was that libraries are for your use and aren’t just about books.
Galway’s public libraries are a wonderful resource and you don’t have to be a member to enjoy them, nor do you have to read books to avail of the many services they offer. Libraries are no longer "shush" spaces. Yes, they can be quiet and relaxed places where people can enjoy reading or research work, but they are equally engaging spaces featuring public talks, music sessions, story-telling sessions as well as being replete with a range of resources for learning and support.
