Beating the bushes to find food falling from the trees

BEING in business can be tough but there aren’t many entrepreneurs who pick up bramble scars or face a growling badger during their working day.
Headford’s resident slow food advocate and berry picker Kathleen McMahon has encountered a few of the animal inhabitants during her time spent gathering goodness from the hedgerows. However, this native of Texas might fight her way through a prickly bramble but leaves the unhappy bullocks and growling badgers as fast as her legs will carry her.
Kathleen, who has developed her own foraging brand Black River Wild, is just of many Co Galway food producers and craftspeople who will showcase at this weekend’s Local Food and Craft Gift Fair in Galway’s Black Box Theatre.
Foraging, sourcing ingredients from the wild, is something Kathleen loves and like many other rural entrepreneurs she is continuing to earn a living from something she enjoys and has a passion for.
