Spud-tacular crop in Kilkerrin

Growing giant size potatoes was not the aim of Kilkerrin grandmother Mary Ellen O’Connor when she sowed six ridges near her home but the proof is in the digging and she has unearthed “buckets of giant potatoes in one ridge” almost as big as her grandchildren’s faces.
Mary-Ellen says the family have been sowing potatoes in this area of their garden on and off for over 70 years but never in living memory have they seen spuds as big as the giant ones she unearthed last week.

Some of her spuds weighed well over 2lbs.
