Donoghue to become new Galway hurling manager

MICHEÁL Donoghue is widely expected to be named as the new Galway senior hurling manager. In a brief statement released on the Galway GAA website yesterday, it was confirmed that the Clarinbridge club man is to take over the hot seat with his name to be put forward for ratification by the County Board last night (Tuesday).
Donoghue guided his native club to All-Ireland success in 2011 when they defeated Kilkenny’s O’Loughlin Gaels in the final and went on to manage Turloughmore. In more recent times he was part of Eamonn O’Shea’s backroom in Tipperary and was also a member of Clarinbridge’s management team when the club won the County Minor A Championship final against Kilnadeema-Leitrim.
Donoghue was nominated for the position along with Mattie Kenny, John Hardiman, Justin Campbell, Johnny Kelly and Gerry McInerney and was installed the short-priced favourite for the role after Anthony Cunningham stepped down amid player unrest in mid-November after four years at the helm.
