Micheál Donoghue

Six contenders for Galway hurling job

THE SHORTLIST of contenders to fill the vacant Galway senior hurling manager position has become known. The deadline for nominations from clubs passed on Monday afternoon and six names are in the frame to replace Anthony Cunningham, who stepped down a fortnight ago after four years at the helm.
Micheál Donoghue, who guided his club Clarinbridge to All-Ireland success in 2011 and managed Turloughmore in recent years, remains the short-priced favourite to take over the role.
Mattie Kenny was previously part of the Galway backroom in 2012 and ’13 and was in contention for the job before Cunningham’s tenure was extended in late 2014. The Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry clubman managed Cuala to their first Dublin SHC in 21 years and on to last Sunday’s Leinster final defeat to Oulart-the-Ballagh of Wexford.
