Headford hero Cunningham on the comeback trail

By Cian O’Connell

SINCE making a welcome return to the SSE Airtricity League Galway United have been quietly carving out an identity again. Suddenly youngsters are beginning to realise what can be achieved by aspiring to feature for the Eamonn Deacy Park outfit.
Twenty five native Galwegians played for the club in two seasons – a staggering statistic especially when taking into account that several others from the county are forging successful careers in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
From Camus to Glenamaddy budding footballers continue to wear the maroon shirt with passion and a fresh sense of purpose. Padraic Cunningham’s drive and desire has been evident on a national stage, and despite suffering a nasty knee injury the Headford native hopes to be ready to commence pre-season in the second week of January.
On Friday Cunningham’s bright displays in 2015 were acknowledged with the Galway United Young Player of the Year award. “It was nice to get it especially after the horrible ending to the season for me,” Cunningham admitted.
