A long road to glenamaddy for couples marathon cycle
A GLENAMADDY native has chosen to take the scenic route as he returns home after two years in Japan.
Ciaran Hussey, from Patch, is the son of well-known former Galway East FF TD and Senator, Tom, and his wife, Bridie.
After spending the last two years teaching English in Kanazawa, Japan, Ciaran and his girlfriend, Laura McMorrow, will make around half of their marathon 6,000 mile journey home on their bikes.
Ciaran and Laura said 'sayonara’ to Japan, yesterday (Tuesday) when they boarded a flight to Mongolia. From there, the couple will take to their bikes following the breath-taking Chuisky Tract as far as Novosibirsk in Siberia – a journey of just under 1,600 miles. While temperatures in that part of the world can drop to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, July promises a much more pleasant average of 19 degrees.
From Russia, the couple will fly on to Romania. The political situation between Russia and Ukraine and the difficulty of securing visas prompted the decision to make that part of the journey by plane. In Bucharest, Ciaran and Laura will revert to two-wheel transport, making their way through Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Holland.
