Drivers stayed on the dry for christmas

MORE drivers are heeding warnings against drink driving with a drop in arrests this festive season in the county.
During Christmas week 14 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in Co Galway, but only one of these was in the Tuam Garda District. Two others were in the Ballinasloe Garda area and all the rest in Galway City, South Galway and Connemara.
While the overall figure for the county seems high it is still down on previous years. Gardai are happy to say that more people are using designated drivers in their groups to take them home, while many left their cars outside pubs and took taxis or lifts home.
This comes in the wake of figures which show that Galway is the second worst county in Connacht for drink driving, at 46.673 convictions per 1,000 population.
