Loss of spaces hits taxi drivers

IRATE Tuam taxi drivers say there is no room for more than half of them to park in designated permanent ranks in Tuam, and they claim they are losing more spaces due to the expansion of footpaths and construction of additional pedestrian crossings at The Square.
Two of the drivers who spoke to The Tuam Herald this week say that they are losing two spaces at the top of the main permanent designated rank at Shop Street and two more at the other permanent rank outside The Abbey Tavern at The Square.
“There are 25 taxi drivers operating in Tuam and with the latest cut backs we have only room for about ten to park in designated permanent ranks,” said one of the taxi drivers.

Director of Services at Tuam Municipal District Liam Gavin said they were endeavouring to get the balance right.
He said there had been a huge outcry from shop owners that the ranks were too long and were preventing shoppers parking on the street.
